Business Profile

Welcome rom its home city of Birmingham, Ex Cathedra aims to explore, research and commission the finest choral music and to set the highest standards for excellence in musical performance. Under its founder and artistic director, Jeffrey Skidmore, Ex Cathedra is known for its passion for seeking out the best, the unfamiliar and the unexpected in the choral repertoire, for its thorough research and for its dynamic performances.
Ex Cathedra presents a season of concerts in Birmingham and London, and is delighted to receive invitations to festivals and concert series across the United Kingdom and Europe.

About Us We are sometimes asked about the name Ex Cathedra. Cathedra is the name for the bishop’s throne, in the same way that a cathedral is the building that houses that throne. When Jeffrey Skidmore and one of the founding members of the choir were choosing a name for the new group, they chose Ex Cathedra because it literally means ‘from the throne’ or in English usage ‘with authority’.
At the time, Jeffrey and several members of the choir sang at Birmingham Cathedral, and the name was partially chosen as a pun. But researching and understanding the repertoire so that it can be performed with authority has been a guiding principle for Jeffrey since the first performances in 1969.

Concerts Ex Cathedra is a versatile ensemble with a wide-ranging repertoire. It can appear as a Consort of 8-12 of the UK's finest consort singers, as a chamber choir of around 35 singers, and has recently even expanded up to 120 singers (XL Choir) for specific repertoire. Instruments are added as required by the repertoire. Ex Cathedra has its own Baroque Orchestra / Ensemble and regularly collaborates with other ensembles.
