Maths hotshot Shannon hopes votes add up in model contest

A TEENAGER whose favourite school subject is maths hopes the sum of her talents will help her to win a national competition.

Shannon Bellworthy, 15 - whose ambition is to become a stockbroker - has been selected to compete in the semi - final stage of Miss Teen Great Britain.

Shannon is online now competing with about 100 other girls to reach the next stage of the competition, when only 60 faces will have been chosen out of more than 2,000 who have entered.

The grand final takes place in September in Blackpool and Shannon is thrilled to have a chance to win the title.

She was surprised when she was approached by two talent scouts at the Clothes Show in Birmingham.

'I was just at the show walking around when a talent scout came up to me and asked me if I'd like to enter.

'It was a real surprise but I was pretty flattered,' she said.

Shannon, from Woburn Place, Mackworth, certainly has high ambitions, perhaps not to be on pages of glossy magazines but instead to beat the stock market.

She is a pupil at Murray Park School in Mickleover and her favourite subject at school is maths.

Parents Rachel and Darren are really proud.

Rachel said Shannon had been doing really well at school, especially in maths, and was destined for good GCSE grades. Her modelling success is a bonus.

Rachel said: 'It was a shock when Shannon told us she'd been approached.

'After that we never expected anything of it really, so it was really lovely when they contacted her to say she'd been selected to get this far!'

Sophie Cartwright, events and contestant coordinator at Miss Teen Great Britain, said: 'This is only our second year and we've had a fantastic response.

'We're hoping it's going to grow and grow. The judging to decide the finalists will happen at the end of this month so then we'll know who will make it to Blackpool.'

'What is important at interview stage is that the girls have lots to say. The competition is about much more than just a pretty face, but to have both brains and beauty is a winning combination.

'Only 60 girls will make it through to the grand final so judging is going to be tough!'

The prizes will include an introduction to leading teen modelling and casting agencies - Euroteens and Eka Model & Actor management - a selection of dresses from Celebrity Fashion Direct and a huge hamper of cosmetics.
